Kofi Owusu (15) died in incident in river Nanny in Co Meath on Friday

Tributes have been pouring in for the 'genuinely lovely' Kofi Owusu, a 15-year-old from Dundalk, Co Louth, who tragically passed away while swimming in Laytown, Co Meath on Friday.

Cllr Seán Kelly of Louth County Council expressed his devastation at the news, highlighting Kofi's exceptional talent in sports, particularly football. The community is reeling from the loss of such a promising young individual.

Redeemer Celtic Football Club, where Kofi was a cherished team member, shared a touching tribute online with two jerseys bearing his number six. The club is in mourning, and the facility remains closed as a mark of respect.

Described as a 'genuinely lovely lad with the warmest smile' by locals, Kofi was an active member of his school's basketball team at Coláiste Chú Chulainn in Dundalk. He had recently completed his Junior Certificate exams before the tragic incident.

Kofi was swimming with friends in the river Nanny near Laytown beach when reports of him getting into difficulty prompted a search operation. Despite efforts from Rescue 116 helicopter and the Coast Guard Unit, his body was recovered later that evening and taken to Our Lady's Hospital in Navan for a postmortem.

Minister of State for European Affairs Thomas Byrne expressed his condolences, emphasizing the devastating impact of Kofi's untimely death. The community is urged to respect the family's privacy and refrain from sharing sensitive information online.

Cllr Sharon Tolan of Meath County Council acknowledged the somber atmosphere enveloping the community following the tragic loss. Independent councillor Carol Lennon echoed these sentiments, highlighting the stark contrast between a joyful summer day and the heartbreaking outcome.

This tragedy marks the second drowning of a teenager in Ireland within a week, prompting Water Safety Ireland to issue a plea for heightened caution in water-related activities, especially for under-18s.

Another recent drowning victim, Peter Byrne, 17, from Co Carlow, lost his life in a similar incident. The community is rallying around both families in their time of grief, emphasizing the importance of water safety awareness.
