South Sydney Rabbitohs winger Alex Johnston's exceptional four-try performance against the Melbourne Storm has brought him close to Ken Irvine's try-scoring record. Irvine currently holds the top spot with 212 tries, but Johnston's fourth try in the 53rd minute of the Round 16 match against Melbourne has put him in a position to surpass Irvine.
During the game, Fox League's Dan Ginnane commented on Johnston's performance, stating, 'Intercept! This is four. 206. He's piling them up. Johnston, he might get there tonight. This is just remarkable.' Co-commentator Kevin Walters also praised Johnston's efforts, calling it a 'magic effort.'
Johnston's hat-trick earlier in the game, with assists from Latrell Mitchell, showcased his exceptional skills. Not only is he close to breaking Irvine's record, but he also made history by becoming the first player to score four tries in a single game against Melbourne.
Since scoring his first try on debut in 2014, Johnston has accumulated 206 career tries, just six short of Irvine's record. With Irvine's record standing since 1993, Johnston is now in a prime position to become the NRL's all-time leading try scorer, surpassing legends like Billy Slater.
