In the latest incident, a plane carrying hundreds of Haj pilgrims back to Indonesia from the Middle East was diverted on Saturday after a bomb threat, marking the second such occurrence in a week.

Saudia Airlines flight SV5688 had flown from Jeddah to Muscat before heading to Indonesia where it was scheduled to land in Surabaya, Java's main island.

However, air traffic control in Jakarta received a bomb threat call for the flight, leading to its diversion to Kualanamu International Airport in Medan city on Saturday morning, as reported by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

Asri Santosa, the head of the regional airport authority, mentioned that officers were inspecting the plane upon its arrival, while operations at the Sumatra island airport continued as usual.

All 376 passengers, Haj pilgrims from Java, along with 13 crew members were reported safe at the airport, according to North Sumatra police spokesman Ferry Walintukan.

A bomb squad was dispatched to conduct a thorough check of the aircraft, with plans for the passengers to resume their journey on Sunday, as confirmed by Asri.

Tempo, an Indonesian news site, reported that the country's anti-terror squad Densus 88 is currently investigating the recent bomb threat.

Earlier in the week, a plane transporting 442 Haj pilgrims from Saudi Arabia to Jakarta was also diverted to Medan following an email bomb threat to authorities.

General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, the chief of the Indonesian National Police (Polri), mentioned that they are collaborating with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation to investigate the email bomb threat, ensuring a thorough examination of the case.
