Which? conducted tests on 15 well-known sunscreens to check they provided at least the minimum required level of sun protection - and one supermarket's own-brand failed

Consumers have been cautioned against purchasing a particular UK supermarket's own-brand sun cream due to its failure in a safety test. Which? examined 15 popular sunscreens to ensure they met the minimum required level of sun protection.

The evaluation revealed that Morrisons Moisturising Sun Spray SPF30 did not meet the necessary SPF protection levels. Natalie Hitchins, head of home products and services at Which?, expressed concerns about the findings, stating that it is worrisome that widely available sunscreens may not provide the stated level of sun protection, as reported by the Manchester Evening News.

According to Express Online, in two separate assessments, the sunscreen failed to meet the minimum UVA protection requirements, scoring only 25.7 initially and dropping to 20.7 in a subsequent test.

A Morrisons representative responded by stating that all their sun care products undergo extensive testing to ensure they meet industry standards before being launched. Following the report from Which?, the SPF of the sunscreen was retested against the British and International Standard BS EN ISO 24444:2020, achieving an SPF value of 34.5, allowing it to be labeled as SPF 30.
