‘One for the ages’: UFC boss announces legend’s shock retirement

Considered the greatest mixed martial arts champion of all time, Jon Jones has officially retired, as announced by UFC CEO Dana White. The 37-year-old informed the UFC of his decision to retire, which came as a surprise to many.

Plans for a heavyweight title unification bout between Jones and interim champion Tom Aspinall were in the works, but Jones' retirement means Aspinall is now the undisputed champion.

White revealed that Jones called the UFC to confirm his retirement, making Aspinall the new heavyweight champion. Aspinall's first title defense is in the works, although Jones has not publicly commented on his retirement.

Jones, with a record of 28-1, transitioned from the light heavyweight division to become the heavyweight champion in 2023. He successfully defended his belt against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 in November last year. Despite talks of a potential fight with Aspinall, Jones downplayed the matchup and ultimately decided to retire.

Tom Aspinall, now the heavyweight champion, has shown great sportsmanship and willingness to fight anyone. White expressed excitement to work with Aspinall and praised his attitude throughout the process.

While Jones' retirement marks the end of an era, UFC fans can look forward to Aspinall's reign as the new champion and his upcoming fights in the heavyweight division.
