Obesity has become a major health concern in Pakistan, with leading gastroenterologists and liver specialists warning that it has led to a rise in fatty liver disease, liver failure, and an increased demand for liver transplants. Experts emphasize the importance of adopting healthy eating habits and staying physically active to prevent premature deaths and costly medical treatments.

Unhealthy lifestyles and obesity are also linked to a significant increase in colorectal cancer cases among young people in Pakistan. During the 7th Annual Conference of the Pakistan GI and Liver Disease Society (PGLDS), experts highlighted the urgent need for a national colorectal screening program to address this growing threat.

Dr. Lubna Kamani, President of PGLDS, emphasized the connection between obesity, fatty liver disease, and various gastrointestinal conditions. While there are new medications available for these conditions, prevention through a healthy diet and regular exercise remains the best approach.

Sindh Health Secretary Rehan Iqbal Baloch, speaking at the conference, recognized the challenges patients face in accessing GI and liver care in the country. The event brought together local and international experts to discuss the impact of obesity on public health in Pakistan.
