Home Minister Amit Shah has stated that India has no intention of reinstating the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan and instead plans to redirect excess water to Rajasthan that was previously flowing to the neighboring nation from Jammu and Kashmir.
This declaration has sparked a strong reaction from Islamabad, labeling such actions as a 'reckless and dangerous precedent' that undermines the credibility of international agreements.
During an interview with an English daily, Shah emphasized that the treaty will not be revived. He outlined India's strategy to utilize the water intended for Pakistan for domestic purposes by constructing a canal to divert it to Rajasthan. This move aims to deprive Pakistan of water that it has been receiving undeservedly.
Following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, where 25 tourists and a local pony operator lost their lives, India suspended the 1960 treaty that regulates the usage of the Indus river system. Despite a recent ceasefire agreement between the two nations after a period of heightened tensions, there has been no progress on this issue.
The Indus Waters Treaty had ensured water supply for 80% of Pakistan's agricultural land through three rivers originating in India.
A spokesperson from the Pakistan Foreign Ministry criticized Shah's statement, denouncing it as a 'flagrant disregard for the sanctity of international agreements.' They emphasized that the treaty is a binding international agreement that does not permit unilateral actions. Pakistan views India's decision to suspend the treaty as a violation of international laws, the treaty itself, and the core principles of inter-state relations.
The spokesperson warned that such behavior sets a dangerous precedent that undermines the credibility of international agreements and raises doubts about the reliability of a state that openly refuses to fulfill its legal obligations. Pakistan reiterated its commitment to upholding the treaty and vowed to protect its legitimate rights and entitlements under it.
