A judge is now one step closer to delivering a verdict after defence lawyers wrapped up their closing arguments Monday in the sexual assault trial involving five ex-Team Canada juniors

Defense lawyers representing five former members of Canada's world junior hockey team have started presenting their final arguments in the sexual assault trial overseen by Judge Maria Carroccia. The players, Michael McLeod, Dillon Dube, Alex Formenton, Carter Hart, and Callan Foote, have all pleaded not guilty to the charges. McLeod faces an additional charge of being a party to the offense of sexual assault.

The trial, which began in late April, centers around an incident involving the complainant, who met some of the players at a bar in June 2018. While the initial encounter is not part of the trial, the focus is on the events that unfolded after that. Testimonies from nine witnesses, including the complainant and one of the accused, have been heard.

Following the defense's closing arguments, prosecutors are expected to present their submissions later this week. Once all arguments are heard, Justice Carroccia will schedule a date to deliver her verdict.
