The PM says he has expressed his concern to the US government over the incident that occurred during protests against immigration raids in Los Angeles

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his horror at the footage of Nine correspondent Lauren Tomasi being shot by a rubber bullet while reporting on protests against immigration raids in Los Angeles. Albanese has already raised concerns with the US government over the incident.

Tomasi and her camera operator were caught on camera as an officer aimed and fired in their direction. Albanese described Tomasi as 'pretty resilient' after speaking with her directly.

During a press conference at the National Press Club, Albanese emphasized the importance of the media's role and stated that it is unacceptable for such incidents to occur.

Concerns and Reactions

Tomasi herself described the incident as shocking but mentioned that she only suffered minor injuries. She expressed that she did not want to be the focus of the story, emphasizing the chaotic situation unfolding in Los Angeles.

Tomasi is the second journalist to be hit by police during the protests, with another journalist undergoing emergency surgery for injuries sustained during the standoff.

Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell expressed concern over the incidents involving members of the media and assured that they are investigating ways to minimize injuries to bystanders, including journalists.

Media Union Response

The Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA) condemned the shooting, stating that journalists reporting from the frontlines should be protected and accorded the same rights as other frontline workers.

On social media, Tomasi thanked well-wishers for their messages and indicated her commitment to continue telling important stories despite the incident.

Call for Investigation

Today show co-host Karl Stefanovic called for a thorough investigation into the incident, expressing concern over the footage that appeared to show Tomasi being deliberately shot. He emphasized the importance of journalists like Tomasi who report on complex and dangerous issues.

Stefanovic praised Tomasi as a hard-working and fair reporter, highlighting her dedication to bringing important stories to viewers around the world.
