The Ministry of Defence is considering acquiring six more Embraer aircraft from Brazil to convert them into Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) using DRDO developed Netra Mark 1A mounted AESA radars. This move aims to address critical capability gaps and strengthen conventional deterrence. The proposal will be presented to the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh soon.
Additionally, the government has approved the wet lease of one KC-135 mid-air refueller from the US-based Metrea military contractor. It has also initiated the acquisition of six more mid-air refuellers based on an RFP issued by the Defence Ministry's acquisition wing. Currently, India operates six Russian refuellers.
The urgent requirement for AEW&C aircraft arises from the presence of eight SAAB-2000 aircraft with Erieye radar systems and four Chinese ZDK-03 aircraft in the Pakistan air force's fleet. After Operation Sindoor, Pakistan now has seven SAAB-2000 Erieye AEW&C aircraft. These aircraft are crucial for monitoring enemy territory from a distance of up to 350 km to detect incoming aerial threats and artillery fire.
Moreover, China is supplying Yuan-class diesel submarines, frigates, and armed drones to Pakistan, while Turkey is involved in building corvettes, upgrading submarines, and providing spare parts for F-16 aircraft. Indian military experts are analyzing recovered Chinese and Turkish missiles and drones to enhance their understanding of potential threats.
India is the sole country with operational data on Chinese weapon systems like J-10 fighters, HQ-9 air defence systems, and the performance of its Rafale fighters. The assessment post-Operation Sindoor does not discount the possibility of mass casualty attacks from Pakistan-based jihadist groups in the future.
During Operation Sindoor, Indian forces targeted nine terror camps in Pakistan and PoK, eliminating at least 100 terrorists. The Indian Air Force conducted strikes on 13 Pakistani airbases and military installations. Recent revelations indicate that Indian drones struck locations from Peshawar to Hyderabad within Pakistan during the conflict.
Pakistan's Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos, launched in response to Operation Sindoor, concluded within eight hours on May 10. This rapid conclusion contradicted Islamabad's aim of bringing India to its knees in 48 hours. Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan highlighted the swift resolution of the operation.
