As Migrant Workers Day is observed this year, the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) acknowledges the significant contributions of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) worldwide. These individuals have shown great courage in facing separation and adapting to unfamiliar environments to provide a better future for their families.

CHR emphasizes the importance of continuously improving the quality of life for OFWs and their families by protecting their rights and welfare, especially for those vulnerable to poor working conditions, human trafficking, abuse, discrimination, and lack of access to justice.

It is crucial to address the diverse needs of migrant workers upon their return to the Philippines. This includes offering social protection measures like unemployment assistance, job-matching services, social pensions, retirement benefits, and psychosocial support for survivors of abuse and trafficking.

The Commission recently issued a human rights advisory aligned with the UN Committee on Migrant Workers' recommendations, urging the Philippine government to enhance protection measures for OFWs. This includes developing a national action plan, policy frameworks, and conducting research to strengthen support systems, particularly for vulnerable groups.

CHR highlights the importance of extending respect and protection of human rights beyond borders. The Commission applauds the efforts of relevant government agencies in safeguarding the rights of Filipinos abroad. Recognizing OFWs as modern-day heroes, it is essential for the government to take concrete and continuous actions to uphold their dignity and that of their families.
