Authorities from the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) apprehended a police sergeant on Tuesday, June 10, in connection with the escape of an inmate from a substation detention facility of the Caloocan City Police.
NCRPO director Maj. Gen. Anthony A. Aberin stated that the arrest was a result of an accounting of Persons Under Police Custody at the Caloocan City Police Substation 6.
Following an investigation, it was discovered that an inmate had escaped on the night of June 8, with the incident only being reported the following Monday.
Further scrutiny of records revealed that the detained police staff sergeant was the jailer on duty during the escape, failing to report the incident.
The officer was apprehended around 10 a.m. on Tuesday in Caloocan City for alleged negligence.
Aberin noted, "Immediate verification and investigation uncovered lapses in custodial procedures."
The arrested policeman is now facing charges for violating Article 224 of the Revised Penal Code (Infidelity in the Custody of Prisoner or Evasion through Negligence).
This operation was carried out in accordance with the directive of national police chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III to pursue law enforcement officers who break the law.
Aberin emphasized, "NCRPO will take decisive action against any police officers found violating the law, ensuring their rights are respected and due process is followed. Our actions underscore that nobody, especially those entrusted to uphold the law, is exempt from it."
