Rolls-Royce executives have expressed that winning a government contract to construct three cutting-edge nuclear reactors will play a crucial role in preserving research positions in Derby.
The company has been chosen as the government's preferred candidate to supply small modular reactor (SMR) technology, with the aim of reducing energy costs.
The announcement made on Tuesday comes after a two-year competitive bidding process organized by Great British Energy - Nuclear, where Rolls-Royce was up against various international competitors.
The £2.5 billion agreement, according to the company, will position it to potentially lead the global market in a sector it perceives as growing internationally.
