President Donald Trump is set to deliver a speech at Fort Bragg on Tuesday to mark the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army while simultaneously deploying the military to address immigration protests in Los Angeles.
Located near Fayetteville, North Carolina, Fort Bragg serves as the headquarters for U.S. Army Special Operations Command, housing elite units such as the Green Berets and the Rangers.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Army Secretary Dan Driscoll will join Trump at the event, along with service members, veterans, and their families.
Trump has been touting the Army's anniversary as a reason to hold a military parade in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, coinciding with his 79th birthday. The parade will feature tanks and other vehicles, symbolizing the president's efforts to transform the armed forces since taking office this year.
Viewing the military as a key asset for domestic objectives, Trump has deployed the National Guard and U.S. Marines to address the unrest stemming from immigration protests in Los Angeles.
Despite objections from Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Trump has authorized the deployment of 4,000 National Guard soldiers to the city, with an additional 700 Marines expected to be deployed.
California has taken legal action against Trump's deployment, with the state attorney general arguing that it infringes on the state's sovereignty. State leaders have accused Trump of exacerbating tensions among protesters, resulting in disruptive demonstrations including blocking a major freeway and setting autonomous vehicles on fire.
Asserting his stance on maintaining order, Trump stated, "We're gonna have troops everywhere. We're not going to let this happen to our country."
Fort Bragg has been at the center of a debate regarding its historical significance, having been initially named after a Confederate general before being temporarily renamed Fort Liberty. Hegseth reinstated the Bragg name, clarifying that it was in honor of an Army paratrooper from World War II.
