Since the installation of Electronic Road Pricing on-board units (OBUs) began in November 2023, about 5,400 cars in Singapore have encountered issues with their units, requiring return visits to workshops. This accounts for 1.8% of the 300,000 cars that have had the units installed so far, according to the Land Transport Authority (LTA).
LTA mentioned that over 500,000 vehicles, including commercial vehicles, have been equipped with OBUs by June, marking progress towards the goal of fitting around 1 million vehicles with OBUs by 2026. The OBUs are essential for road toll and carpark payments as part of Singapore's transition to the new ERP system, ERP 2.0.
Some car owners reported issues such as unresponsive OBUs that prevented them from entering carparks or paying road charges. Problems with wiring and touchscreen display freezes were also noted. The installation process, which is free for vehicles registered before May 1, 2024, can take between two to four hours, with troubleshooting and replacement potentially taking just as long.
Motorists experiencing OBU issues are advised to return to the workshops that installed the units for effective troubleshooting. For more specialized attention, workshops may refer motorists to others with relevant expertise. Motorists seeking clarification can contact the ERP 2.0 Call Assist Service at 6377-2255.
