The Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry also insists he has never considered taking part in any by-election, whether at the federal or state level.

In a recent statement, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz addressed rumors surrounding his departure from UMNO to join Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s political party. He emphasized that his decision was not linked to any potential by-election, at either the federal or state level. Tengku Zafrul stated that he has never considered participating in a by-election and does not support triggering unnecessary elections that consume time and public funds.

On May 30, Tengku Zafrul announced his resignation from the United Malays National Organisation to join Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), citing factors like compatibility and conformity. Recent speculation suggested that PKR might ask Selangor Chief Minister Amirudin Shari to vacate his seat for Tengku Zafrul to contest in a by-election. However, both Tengku Zafrul and Amirudin have denied these rumors, with Amirudin expressing his intention to complete his term.

As a minister in Malaysia, one must be an MP or appointed senator. Tengku Zafrul, whose term as a senator ends in December, clarified that he will fulfill his duties until then. He also mentioned that he is willing to serve the country in any capacity, leaving his ministerial position to Anwar. Tengku Zafrul reassured that his departure from UMNO after 28 years was a personal decision, expressing gratitude to UMNO President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and the party’s grassroots for their support.

Ahmad Zahid, also the deputy prime minister, criticized Tengku Zafrul’s resignation as unethical, given the unity government's dynamics. This move has raised concerns within PKR as well, with members questioning the timing of Tengku Zafrul's decision. Analysts believe that Tengku Zafrul's transition has created challenges for Anwar as he navigates discontent from various factions.
