The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued a warning about certain Jolly Rancher sweets in the US, stating that chemical compounds in these products could pose a risk of cancer and DNA damage.
In a recent food alert, the FSA highlighted that MOAH, found in these sweets, can potentially harm DNA and increase the likelihood of cancer, especially with prolonged high consumption.
MOAH and MOSH are commonly used in confectionery to prevent stickiness and enhance the appearance of glossiness.
The Hershey Company has been collaborating with the UK government to remove the affected Jolly Rancher items from the UK market since 2024. However, some businesses in Britain have continued to import these products.
The specific products identified as unsafe are: Jolly Rancher Hard Candy, Jolly Rancher 'Misfits' Gummies, Jolly Rancher Hard Candy Fruity 2 in 1, and Jolly Ranchers Berry Gummies.
The FSA recommends that individuals who possess any of these listed products should refrain from consuming them and dispose of them at home. Concerned consumers are encouraged to report to the Trading Standards department or environmental health department in the local authority where the purchase was made.
The agency has urged enforcement authorities to promptly contact businesses that have received or supplied the affected products and ensure their removal from the market.
