The installation-free Android Instant Apps will no longer be supported after December 2025.

Google has announced that it will be shutting down Android's Instant Apps later this year, citing the lack of usage as the primary reason for the decision.

Instant Apps were first introduced in 2017, allowing developers to create condensed versions of Android apps that load instantly. Users can test out apps and games without the need to fully install them, providing a seamless experience and offering developers new ways to reach potential users.

Reports from Android Authority revealed that Google is moving away from this feature, with developer Leon Omelan noticing a warning about the change in Android Studio. The support for Instant Apps will be discontinued by Google Play in December 2025, rendering publishing and all Google Play Instant APIs obsolete. Tooling support in Android Studio Otter Feature Drop will also be removed.

Google spokesperson Nia Carter confirmed the decision, stating that Instant Apps have not gained enough traction to justify continued support. Carter mentioned that developers are utilizing other tools for app discovery, such as AI-powered app highlights and simultaneous app installations. The shift in focus will allow Google to invest more in successful tools for developers and guide users towards full app downloads for enhanced engagement.
