The Canadian citizen believed to be on an Air India flight that crashed shortly after takeoff is a dentist who worked in Mississauga, Ont., her family has confirmed.

The tragic Air India flight crash that occurred shortly after takeoff claimed the life of a Canadian citizen, who was a dentist based in Mississauga, Ontario, as confirmed by her family.

Nirali Sureshkumar Patel's husband revealed that she was on board the London-bound flight that crashed in northwestern India, resulting in the loss of at least 240 lives.

Patel's husband, who is in the process of traveling to India with their one-year-old child, expressed his grief over the loss of his wife, declining to provide his full name and requesting privacy for the family.

The tragic incident took place in a residential area of Ahmedabad, marking India's worst aviation disaster in decades.

Among the deceased were five students staying at a medical college hostel where the plane crashed, with a local hospital receiving 186 bodies.

Despite the high number of casualties, there was one survivor identified as Vishwashkumar Ramesh, who sustained multiple injuries but is reportedly out of danger.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his devastation over the crash, confirming the presence of a Canadian citizen on the ill-fated flight and ensuring close coordination with international transport officials.

Patel, the Canadian dentist, had a background in dentistry from India before relocating to Canada, where she was known for her dedication to community service and volunteering at a free dental camp annually.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with other world leaders, offered their condolences and expressed sorrow over the tragic incident.

The Air India flight was carrying passengers from various nationalities, including 169 Indians, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese nationals, and the lone Canadian, before crashing just five minutes after takeoff.

The aircraft involved in the crash was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, marking the first crash involving this type of aircraft, according to aviation records.

Air Canada and WestJet, both operating Boeing 787 aircraft, have affirmed their confidence in the safety and reliability of their fleets despite the Air India crash.
