Rallies at roughly 2,000 sites planned for Saturday, same day as US president’s military parade and birthday

Anticipated protests against the Trump administration are set to take place on Saturday at around 2,000 locations nationwide in an event known as 'No Kings', coinciding with the president's military parade and birthday.

Interest in the demonstrations has surged following Trump's deployment of national guard and US Marine Corps troops to Los Angeles to quell mostly peaceful protests against increased deportations.

Ezra Levin, co-founder of Indivisible, one of the groups behind the 'day of defiance', noted a significant rise in new events on the No Kings Day map, with hundreds of thousands of people registering for these protests.

The protest's website highlights Trump's defiance of the courts, mass deportations, attacks on civil rights, and reduction of services as reasons for the planned demonstrations, emphasizing the need to end corruption and reject the concept of monarchy.

Actions are scheduled in major cities and small towns across the country, showcasing the widespread opposition to Trump's policies from coast to coast.

The No Kings event will not be held in Washington DC to shift focus away from the military parade, with Philadelphia hosting a flagship march instead. A DC-based organization will host a 'DC Joy Day' to celebrate the city's people and culture.

Organizers have expanded training sessions ahead of the protests due to heightened security concerns following Trump's actions in Los Angeles. Social media posts have encouraged protesters to be prepared for various scenarios and to prioritize their safety.

Despite Trump's threats of a forceful response to protesters, organizers anticipate a larger turnout for No Kings than the previous 'Hands Off' protests in early April, with actions planned in Los Angeles and other cities.

Heather Friedli in Minnesota, who is helping organize a rally and march in St Paul, believes the community is prepared to protest against the Trump administration, drawing on past experiences of organizing after the murder of George Floyd.

Overall, the No Kings protests aim to demonstrate widespread opposition to Trump's policies and strengthen the movement for future events, serving as a tactic in a broader strategy to protect American democracy.
