Sam Thompson has made the decision to withdraw from Soccer Aid just before the event is set to take place this weekend. Following a training session, he has opted out of participating in the match.
He will officially announce his withdrawal today, citing his inability to play in the match. Other notable personalities scheduled to play in the event include Wayne Rooney, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, Toni Duggan, Steph Houghton, Jill Scott, Steve Bartlett, Leonardo Bonucci, Nadia Nadim, Diamond, Gorka Marquez, Paddy McGuiness, Sam Quek, Dermot Kennedy, Tom Grennan, and Martin Compston.
Sam sustained an injury during a five-day challenge, where he raised funds for Unicef and surpassed the £1 million mark. He tore his calf muscle during the challenge, leading to his decision to step back from playing this weekend.
Despite not being able to participate as a player, Sam will still have a significant role in the event as part of the coaching team. He expressed his excitement about this new role during an appearance on This Morning, highlighting his involvement alongside the likes of Vicky McClure, Tyson Fury, and Harry Redknapp.

Sam's initial challenge involved delivering the Soccer Aid for UNICEF match ball from Stamford Bridge in London to Old Trafford in Manchester, covering a total distance of 261 miles.
