Enrique Manalo, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) official, reiterated the Philippines' dedication to the United Nations (UN) Charter and stressed the significance of upholding the rule of law and multilateralism during his meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Manalo and Guterres held discussions at the UN headquarters in New York on Friday, June 13, focusing on the cooperation between the Philippines and the UN. Manalo is set to become the new permanent representative to the UN in New York, succeeding Ambassador Antonio Lagdameo in August.

During the meeting, Manalo assured Guterres of the Philippines' unwavering commitment to the UN Charter and its work. He highlighted the importance of multilateralism, international law, and a rules-based international order, according to a statement from the DFA.

Guterres, in turn, expressed gratitude for the Philippines' significant and positive contributions to the UN and praised the strong PH-UN relations. He also acknowledged the country's role as a reliable partner in areas like peace and security, development, human rights, and environmental protection.

The officials addressed the issue of climate change, particularly its impact on the Philippines as a nation highly susceptible to its effects. They discussed the need for innovative solutions to address climate adaptation and the Loss and Damage Fund, focusing on financing to support the country's climate vulnerability.

Furthermore, they talked about financing for development, peacekeeping efforts, and the Philippines' candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council. Guterres concluded the meeting by extending his greetings to President Marcos and wishing the Philippines a Happy Independence Day.

Lagdameo and other members of the Philippine Mission to the UN were present during the meeting.
