Sir Keir Starmer says move is ‘contingency’ measure to support regional security

The United Kingdom is sending additional fighter jets and military aircraft to the Middle East in response to threats from Iran, announced Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer on Saturday. This move is considered a precautionary measure to bolster regional security and potentially offer defensive support to Israel in its conflict with Iran.

Starmer emphasized that the deployment of assets, including jets, is part of a contingency plan to ensure regional stability. He refrained from disclosing specific operational details but acknowledged the rapidly evolving and intense nature of the situation.

While the UK did not intervene in Israel's defense during the initial wave of Iranian attacks on Friday, Iran's state media warned that UK, French, and US bases in the region would be targeted if they assisted Israel in any capacity. The UK has access to bases in Qatar, the UAE, and Bahrain.

Following a discussion with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Starmer highlighted the importance of safety and security for Israel, underscoring the need for all parties to step back from further conflict. He expressed concerns about the potential economic repercussions and emphasized the necessity of de-escalation to prevent further destabilization in the region.

As part of the contingency plan, additional fast jets and refueling aircraft are being dispatched from the UK to the Middle East. These preparations began on Friday morning in response to the deteriorating situation in the region. The UK already maintains RAF jets in the area as part of Operation Shader, which targets remnants of the Isis jihadi group.

Starmer confirmed discussions on de-escalation with US President Donald Trump and Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, with plans for further conversations with world leaders during his journey to Canada.
