Democratic House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, tragically lost their lives after being shot at their home in Brooklyn Park. The incident, described by Gov. Tim Walz as a 'politically motivated assassination,' also left DFL State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, injured from multiple gunshot wounds at their residence in Champlin.
During a press conference, Gov. Walz expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of Speaker Hortman, highlighting her dedication and service to the state of Minnesota. He praised her as a remarkable public servant and a significant figure in the state.
Authorities revealed that the lawmakers and their spouses were attacked by an individual posing as a police officer. A manhunt is currently underway in Brooklyn Park to locate the suspect, with residents in the surrounding area advised to stay indoors.
Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Superintendent Drew Evans disclosed that the police responded to the Hoffman residence in Champlin first, followed by a similar attack at Hortman's home in Brooklyn Park. Despite exchanging gunfire with the suspect, law enforcement was unable to apprehend the perpetrator.
