Singapore's Preventive Healthcare Programme: Challenges and Progress

More than a million Singaporeans and permanent residents aged 40 and above have signed up for Healthier SG, but not all have followed through with their health plans.

Many Singaporeans are confused about the various government health initiatives, including Healthier SG, CHAS, and Age Well SG, which have different aims and requirements.

For example, CHAS offers subsidies for medical and dental care based on income, while Age Well SG focuses on helping seniors stay active and socially connected.

One user, Ms Karen Athaide, realized the difference between Healthy365 and Healthier SG after using the Healthy365 app for exercise challenges.

To sign up for Healthier SG, users must download the HealthHub app, select their profile, and choose a clinic for a fully subsidized consultation with a GP to create a health plan.

However, the process can be cumbersome for some, especially caregivers like Ms Irene Tay, who find the steps and GP visits time-consuming.

Despite initial positive trends in vaccination and lifestyle changes, a key challenge for Healthier SG is ensuring the sustainability of healthy habits in the long run.

MOH plans to expand the number of conditions covered by Healthier SG care protocols and improve health plans to encourage preventive health measures.

Doctors suggest streamlining administrative tasks and expanding eligibility criteria to reduce workload and make the programme more flexible.

Overall, Healthier SG aims to shift mindsets towards proactive health management, with support from family doctors and community initiatives.
