Minnesota Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband were tragically killed in a politically-motivated assassination at their home. The gunman also targeted Senator John Hoffman and his wife, severely injuring them. The series of attacks occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning by a suspect believed to be posing as a police officer.

Superintendent Drew Evans confirmed that the Hoffmans' home was shot at 2 am, followed by another shooting at the Hortmans' home at 3:35 am. Governor Tim Walz expressed cautious optimism that the Hoffmans would survive the attack, calling it an unspeakable tragedy.

Walz labeled the events as targeted political violence and emphasized the importance of peaceful discourse in a democracy. Law enforcement issued a shelter-in-place order in Brooklyn Park as they search for the suspect, described as a white male wearing body armor and potentially impersonating law enforcement.

Residents were advised to remain vigilant and not approach the suspect. The investigation is ongoing, with Brooklyn Park Police leading the efforts. Mayor Zach Lindstrom condemned the violence and expressed solidarity with the affected families.

Melissa Hortman, a former minority leader, represented District 34 B and leaves behind two children. Senator Hoffman, serving his fourth term, represents District 34 and has a wife and daughter. Governor Walz called for a united stand against political violence in the wake of this tragic incident.
