Kieran Innes was faced with kidney failure at the age of 25, leaving him worried about his future plans. However, thanks to his father's kidney donation, Kieran's life has been transformed, and he can now look forward to his dream wedding with fiancée Lara Russell.
The couple is set to get married in Uphall, West Lothian, next month and go on a honeymoon to New York followed by Italy. Kieran expressed how different things would have been if he had still been on dialysis, making planning the wedding and honeymoon a challenge. His health took a turn for the worse during a family holiday in 2022, leading to the diagnosis of kidney failure and the need for dialysis.
After being put on the waiting list for a kidney, Kieran's fiancée reached out to their families for a live kidney donation. Despite eight people coming forward, Kieran's dad was the chosen donor for the transplant in March 2024.
Brian Innes, Kieran's father, shared his feelings of anxiety and nervousness before the operation but knew he had to do something to alleviate his son's suffering. The successful transplant has brought the father and son closer together, with Brian expressing pride in his decision to donate his kidney.
Following the surgery, both Brian and Kieran have recovered well, and Kieran is back to work and able to plan his wedding and future without the worries of dialysis. Brian, a BBC Scotland cameraman, was back at work after eight weeks and even covered a football championship in Germany a few weeks later.
As the kidney is expected to last about 25 years, Kieran may need more transplants in the future. However, he is grateful to his father for giving him a new lease on life and the ability to fulfill his dreams.
