Tony McEntee has decided to step down as the Sligo senior football manager following the team's loss to Fermanagh in the Tailteann Cup quarter-final at Brewster Park over the weekend.
Fermanagh emerged victorious with a score of 0-21 to 1-16, dashing Sligo's hopes of progressing to the semi-finals of the competition.
McEntee, who had been at the helm for five seasons, had set his sights on clinching the Tailteann Cup title for his team. The disappointment of falling short in this year's tournament will be keenly felt by both the outgoing management and players.
After the game on Saturday, McEntee spoke to the press and confirmed his immediate resignation.
Throughout his tenure, McEntee oversaw a total of 58 matches in the FBD, league, and championship for Sligo, winning 34 of them. His five-year leadership makes him the longest-serving senior football manager in Sligo's history.
In a statement released on Saturday, Sligo GAA Chairman Declan Rouse acknowledged McEntee's significant contributions to the development of Sligo football. Rouse praised the strong performance culture instilled by McEntee and his team, expressing optimism for the future of the sport in the county. Rouse extended best wishes to McEntee in his future endeavors, jokingly adding a hope that they won't be competing against each other.
