Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu assured that the government will thoroughly investigate all possible theories behind the recent Air India plane crash. This comes after the deadliest aviation incident in three decades. Naidu also announced the formation of a high-level panel to determine the root cause of the crash of Air India flight 171 bound for London. The panel, led by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, is expected to deliver its findings within three months.

Additionally, India is considering establishing a new aviation safety board, similar to the National Transportation Safety Board in the US. This board would oversee regulatory bodies like the Director General of Civil Aviation. The proposal involves collaboration between the ministries of civil aviation and home, with discussions ongoing about the board's responsibilities and scope.

While the Aircraft Accident Investigation Board (AAIB) currently handles safety recommendations, it does not scrutinize DGCA policies. The potential new safety board aims to enhance transparency in aviation accident data and establish a credible national safety authority. Talks are in the early stages, exploring different structures and functions for the board.

According to a former official from the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the need for a dedicated safety board in India has been a topic of discussion. The nature of this board, whether judicial, quasi-judicial, or recommendatory, is still under consideration as conversations progress.
