Anthony Nash was arrested on suspicion of drink driving but the case against him has been dismissed

Former Cork goalkeeper and two-time All Star hurler, Anthony Nash, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving after his car was found in a ditch with the back protruding onto the road. During the arrest, Nash asked the garda 'do you know who I am?' and admitted 'I'm drunk'. The case against him was dismissed due to a lack of evidence regarding the time of driving.

Details of the Incident

Cork District Court heard that Nash's car crashed into a ditch in Cloghroe, Blarney, Co Cork on August 9th, 2023. Garda Catherine Byrne arrived at the scene and found Nash disheveled and distressed. Nash identified himself as the driver, admitted to being drunk, and asked the garda if she knew who he was.

Despite Nash's admission of drinking, the case was dismissed as there was no evidence of the time of driving within the three hours prior to the alcohol test. The court did not convict based on assumptions and lack of concrete evidence.

Legal Proceedings and Dismissal

Garda Byrne arrested Nash on suspicion of drink driving and he was brought to Gurranabraher Garda Station. Nash cooperated with the authorities but was unable to provide a urine sample. He later complied with a blood test, which showed alcohol levels exceeding the legal limit.

The defense argued that there was no evidence of the time of driving, leading to the case being dismissed by Judge Philip O'Leary. Despite Nash's successful hurling career and accolades, the court focused on the lack of evidence in the case.

Anthony Nash's Career and Retirement

Anthony Nash had a successful hurling career, winning back-to-back All Star awards in 2012 and 2013. He retired from inter-county hurling in 2020 and transitioned into coaching roles with various teams. Nash's contributions to Cork hurling were significant, and his retirement marked the end of a fifteen-season career.
