Ryland Headley linked to murder of Louisa Dunne, 75, in Bristol after semen found on her skirt was tested in 2024

An elderly man, aged 92, has been apprehended for the alleged rape and murder of a woman almost sixty years ago, thanks to advancements in DNA technology that helped identify him as a suspect, according to court proceedings.

The tragic incident involving the death of Louisa Dunne, a 75-year-old mother of two, in Bristol back in 1967 sparked a thorough police investigation. However, the perpetrator remained elusive until recent DNA testing linked the crime scene evidence to a man named Ryland Headley from Ipswich, Suffolk, who denies the charges of murder and rape.

During the prosecution's opening statements, Anna Vigars KC emphasized the relentless efforts of law enforcement in pursuing justice for the victim. Regardless of the time that has passed, the murder of any individual remains a significant concern, especially when the victim is an elderly and vulnerable person like Louisa Dunne.

Ryland Headley, who relocated to Suffolk after the murder, was implicated in two rape cases in 1977, where he threatened his victims with violence. The court learned that Dunne, a well-known figure in her community, was found deceased in her home, prompting a detailed investigation that failed to identify the killer at the time.

Following the discovery of semen on Dunne's clothing, which was preserved as evidence, forensic analysis in 2024 revealed a DNA match to Headley, leading to his arrest decades after the crime took place. The court was informed that the DNA evidence was a billion times more likely to belong to Headley than anyone else.

Additional records from the late 1960s placed Headley in close proximity to Dunne's residence, further strengthening the case against him. Despite the passage of time, the commitment of law enforcement to solving cold cases has now brought a suspect to trial for the long-unsolved murder and rape of Louisa Dunne.

The trial is ongoing, shedding light on a tragic event from the past that has finally seen some progress towards justice.
