‘There was tension with the National Front and swastikas on walls. So I’m proud the album is an outsider classic – but feel depressed these songs are still relevant’

As a student in Leeds, Jon King found inspiration in the city's music scene, despite the underlying tensions with the National Front and the Yorkshire Ripper case. Witnessing swastikas on walls and facing police brutality during an anti-NF march fueled his ambition to make a difference.

Teaming up with childhood friend Andy Gill, the band's guitarist, they embarked on a musical journey that led to the creation of their groundbreaking album, Entertainment!. The band's dynamic and sometimes tumultuous relationship resulted in a unique sound that combined punk with funk.

Living on a houseboat and rubbing shoulders with other musicians like UK Subs, Gang of Four's members found inspiration in unlikely places. Their songs, such as '5.45' and 'Guns Before Butter,' delved into societal issues like media manipulation and the threat of nuclear war.

Despite facing challenges like censorship from the BBC for their refusal to change lyrics, Entertainment! went on to become a cult classic. The album, recorded without any effects, has influenced generations of musicians, from Kurt Cobain to Frank Ocean.

Reflecting on the album's enduring relevance, Jon King expresses a mix of pride and melancholy, knowing that the issues they sang about are still prevalent today. He emphasizes that the band's focus was always on creating meaningful music rather than chasing commercial success.

Hugo Burnham, the band's drummer, recalls the early days of Gang of Four, marked by intense rehearsals and shared laughter. Despite disagreements, the band's camaraderie and dedication to their craft shone through. Their decision to sign with EMI for creative control over monetary gain proved pivotal in shaping their musical journey.

Recording Entertainment! in London's Workhouse studio, the band opted for a raw and gritty sound, eschewing overdubs and click tracks. The album's simplicity and funk-infused tracks set them apart from their contemporaries, earning them a reputation as a pioneering force in the music industry.
