R. Kelly was taken to the hospital after reportedly overdosing on medication in prison, with his attorney believing the incident was intentional.
The singer, currently serving a 30-year sentence at the Federal Correctional Institute in Butner, N.C., was rushed to Duke University Hospital in Durham on June 13. Court documents reveal that he had been given an overdose of medications that endangered his life.
According to his attorney, Kelly takes medication for anxiety and sleep, among others. While in solitary confinement, prison staff saw his medications, and he later received additional medication with instructions to take it, all captured on camera.
Despite following directions, Kelly experienced dizziness, faintness, and vision issues the next day. He collapsed, lost consciousness, and was taken to the hospital where he learned about the overdose.
During the transfer to the hospital, Kelly allegedly overheard a prison officer saying, 'This is going to open a whole new can of worms.' The singer was treated for two days at the hospital after being administered an overdose of medication.
His lawyer accuses Bureau of Prisons officials of jeopardizing Kelly's life by giving him a dangerous amount of medication. They also claim that the staff interfered with his medical treatment for blood clots and allege a murder plot against Kelly by colluding with an inmate.
The legal team is requesting Kelly's temporary release to home confinement for his safety. Prosecutors, however, view his actions as manipulative and abusive, painting himself as a victim.
In 2021, Kelly was found guilty of sexual abuse and sentenced to 30 years in prison for various crimes.
