Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province erupted, sending a massive ash cloud 11km high, according to the country's volcanology agency. The alert level of the volcano has been raised to the most dangerous, with warnings of potential lava flows in case of heavy rain.

The eruption occurred at 5.35pm on the tourist island of Flores. The ash column was described as grey with thick intensity. No damage or casualties have been reported so far.

Residents and tourists are advised to stay at least 7km away from the volcano's crater. There is a risk of hazardous lahar floods in communities near rivers if heavy rain falls. Wearing face masks is recommended to protect against volcanic ash.

In November last year, the volcano erupted multiple times, resulting in nine fatalities and thousands of evacuations. International flights to Bali were cancelled as a result. No flights have been reported cancelled after this recent eruption.

Laki-laki, meaning man in Indonesian, is paired with the taller volcano named Perempuan, which means woman. Indonesia, located on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire', frequently experiences seismic and volcanic activity.
