Henry Mount Charles, who passed away on June 18th at the age of 74, was a visionary figure who transformed Slane Castle into a hub for modern Ireland. Born on May 23rd, 1951, he was determined to break away from the traditional aristocratic lifestyle and embrace the contemporary culture.

With a keen entrepreneurial spirit inherited from his grandfather, he ventured into the hospitality industry by opening a restaurant and a nightclub on the castle grounds. He also utilized the natural amphitheatre for hosting iconic rock concerts, featuring legendary bands like Thin Lizzy, U2, The Rolling Stones, and Bruce Springsteen.

Despite facing opposition and threats, Henry Mount Charles persevered and turned the concerts at Slane into a staple of Irish summers, attracting thousands of music enthusiasts.

While he excelled in the entertainment realm, his foray into politics was met with mixed results. Despite his aristocratic background, he joined Fine Gael and made a bid for the European Parliament in 1984, narrowly missing out on the opportunity.

Throughout his life, Henry Mount Charles faced personal challenges, including marital issues and the tragic loss of his gamekeeper. Despite these hardships, he remained dedicated to managing his business ventures, including the successful Slane Distillery.

His legacy as a pioneer in the music industry and a resilient entrepreneur will be remembered by many. Henry Mount Charles leaves behind his wife Iona, their daughter Tamara, and children from his previous marriage.
