General tone of paper was one of familiarity with topics that ‘should be in everyone’s arsenal’

Today's Leaving Cert higher level design and communication graphics (DCG) paper offered a diverse range of questions that catered to different strengths and preferences of students. Rob Kiernan, a DCG teacher at The Institute of Education, expressed overall satisfaction with the paper, despite a challenging moment with an 'unorthodox' question B-1.

Section A of the exam began with short questions that tested various skills. A-1 focused on axonometric axes, appealing to artistic visualisers, while A-2 introduced a conics question that pleased mathematically minded students. A-3 and A-4 continued the trend of familiar questions on oblique planes and interpenetration of solids, respectively.

Moving on to Section B, students encountered a curveball with the appearance of dynamic mechanism, a topic usually found in Section C. While this may have surprised some, questions like B-2 on intersecting planes and B-3 on perspectives provided a more familiar territory for students.

Section C allowed students to choose one question based on their strengths. Topics like dynamic mechanism, assemblies, hyperboloid of revolution, and surface geometry were covered, testing students on different aspects of the DCG curriculum. Overall, the exam was a mix of challenging and familiar questions that required students to apply their knowledge and skills.
