This guidance will determine whether production can go ahead in the controversial Scottish fields, Rosebank and Jackdaw.

A recent set of guidelines has been published to assess the environmental impact of potential oil and gas projects in the North Sea, particularly in the controversial Scottish fields of Rosebank and Jackdaw.

Tessa Khan, executive director of the climate advocacy group Uplift, emphasized that these new guidelines will hold oil and gas companies accountable for the significant climate damage they are causing.

She expressed concerns about the Rosebank oil field, stating that it contradicts the UK's climate goals. The decision on whether to approve the project will be a crucial test of the government's commitment to climate action.

Khan criticized Rosebank as a detrimental project for the UK, arguing that it will not reduce fuel costs or enhance energy independence.

Greenpeace UK supported the government's consideration of emissions from oil and gas combustion in project approvals. However, the organization warned that endorsing projects like Rosebank would only serve to benefit oil companies, calling it a political maneuver.

Mel Evans, head of climate at Greenpeace UK, emphasized the importance of prioritizing renewable energy for genuine energy security and sustainable job creation in the energy sector.

The recent update follows the UK government's recent Spending Review, which allocated funds for the Acorn Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) scheme in Aberdeenshire.

Plans for the future of Grangemouth are also expected to be revealed soon, according to industry experts.
