Mira-Bhayandar is currently facing a worrying increase in dengue cases, with 40 confirmed infections reported so far. Health officials are concerned that this number might rise significantly as the monsoon season progresses, creating favorable conditions for mosquito breeding.

According to data from the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), the number of dengue cases has risen from just three in March to 40 by mid-June. Additionally, malaria cases have also shown an upward trend, increasing from 21 in March to 54 in May, indicating a potential outbreak if immediate action is not taken.

The combination of stagnant water, inadequate drainage systems, and humid weather has provided an ideal environment for mosquitoes to breed. In response, the MBMC has intensified its anti-mosquito efforts, which include public awareness campaigns, insecticide spraying, and sanitation drives. Water purification measures have also been implemented in areas at high risk.

Dr. Nandkumar Lahane, the municipal medical officer, emphasized the importance of community involvement in combating the spread of dengue. He urged people to remain vigilant and adopt preventive measures such as removing standing water, using mosquito repellents, and seeking medical attention promptly if they experience symptoms like high fever, headache, or body aches.

However, some civic leaders have criticized the administration's efforts. Former House Leader Rohidas Patil has called for the use of fogging machines, stating that the current method of spraying insecticides via vehicles has not effectively reduced the mosquito population. Residents have also raised concerns about the quality and effectiveness of the chemicals being used.
