Carson mentioned that she passed away peacefully on Thursday, surrounded by her grandchildren, loved ones, and caregivers.

Hamilton, born on April 25, 1930 in Yazoo City, MS and raised in Chicago, had a remarkable career that spanned over five decades. She was the sole Black actor among her peers at the Goodman School of Drama and gained experience in theater before transitioning to Broadway in the late '50s and early '60s. She also participated in a world tour of plays as part of President John F. Kennedy's cultural exchange program.

Throughout her career, Hamilton appeared in a wide range of TV shows including Gunsmoke, The Bill Cosby Show, Hawaii Five-O, and The Golden Girls. Her most notable roles include Nurse Donna Harris on Sanford and Son, Verdie Foster on The Waltons, and Vivian Potter on Generations.

Hamilton was married to poet and playwright Frank S. Jenkins until his passing in 2014, and the couple frequently collaborated on various theater productions.
