It may be the start of summer but that isn't stopping snow from falling in Alberta, with some areas forecast to receive up to 30 centimetres.

Despite the beginning of summer, Alberta is experiencing unexpected snowfall, with some areas predicted to receive up to 30 centimetres.

Snowfall warnings have been issued for certain areas in the Alberta Rockies by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), indicating that total snow amounts of 25 to 30 cm are expected, with heavy snow persisting in some locations.

Snowfall totals are variable, with accumulations of 10 to 20 cm anticipated for parts of Kananaskis Country, while over 30 cm of snow is expected for Highwood Pass.

Five centimetres of snow are forecasted for sections of the Cowboy Trail in the M.D. of Ranchland, as well as other elevated areas in that vicinity before the snow tapers off tonight.

ECCC advised, "Rapidly accumulating snow will make travel difficult. Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop."

Additionally, parts of Alberta are experiencing heavy rainfall due to a system that brought significant rain yesterday, with reports of nearly 100 mm of rainfall. The highest amounts have been noted over the foothills to the west and southwest of Calgary. Snowfall has also been reported in Kananaskis Village and near Bragg Creek this morning.

As temperatures drop to near zero in affected regions, frost advisories have been issued for some parts of Alberta, with patchy frost expected to form. ECCC recommends covering plants, especially those in frost-prone areas, and taking precautions to safeguard frost-sensitive plants and trees.
