President Donald Trump has extended the deadline for TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to sell the short-form video app to an American owner by another 90 days

President Donald Trump has granted a 90-day extension for TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, to sell the popular video app to an American owner.

Trump signed an executive order on Thursday, allowing the Chinese company more time to find a buyer so that TikTok can continue operating in the United States.

In a statement on Truth Social, Trump expressed his gratitude for the attention to this matter and extended the deadline to September 17, 2025.

TikTok also thanked President Trump for his leadership in ensuring the app remains available to its American users and businesses.

While aboard Air Force One, Trump expressed optimism about Chinese President Xi Jinping's willingness to approve a deal for the app's sale, which is necessary for it to continue operating in the U.S.

The White House emphasized the importance of Americans being able to access TikTok and stated that the administration will work to finalize the deal within the 90-day extension.

Despite initial concerns over national security, support for banning TikTok has decreased, and the app has denied posing any security threats to the U.S.

After an initial ban was overturned, TikTok has been given multiple extensions to find a U.S.-based buyer, with the latest deadline set to expire soon.

Several potential buyers, including Amazon and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, have shown interest in acquiring TikTok, but no deal has been finalized yet.

ByteDance must comply with the law and sell TikTok to an American buyer, a requirement that the company has not publicly confirmed its stance on.

Trump's decision to extend the deadline for TikTok's sale marks a shift from his previous stance of banning the app, which was later overturned by the courts.
